EXHIBITION
Angela Goddard, Curator, Australian Art to 1975, recommends:
‘Modern Woman: Daughters and Lovers 1850–1918: Drawings from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris’
At once an exploration of the uniquely expressive medium of drawing and an insight into the changing role of women in French society, ‘Modern Woman’ pictures mothers, sisters and daughters engaged in domestic and family life, alongside bold portrayals of lovers, courtesans and shopgirls, within the newly public realms of city streets, cafes and the stage. The realities of life for women in Paris, from the mid nineteenth century to the early twentieth, find expression in more than 90 rare drawings, including works by leading artists of the Belle Époque — Edgar Degas, Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Manet, Jean-François Millet, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Auguste Rodin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Through different perspectives, ‘Modern Woman’ presents exquisite vignettes tracing the transformations of woman within art and society alike.
‘Modern Woman: Daughters and Lovers 1850–1918: Drawings from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris’ will be on display from 24 March until 24 June 2012, QAG. Admission fees apply. Gallery Members receive discounted exhibition entry – $14. Purchase tickets in advance through qtix (booking fees apply) or at the exhibition entry.

Contemporary Australia: Women
'Contemporary Australia: Women’, the second in our major exhibition series dedicated to the best in current Australian art, is coming together right now and the catalogue of the same name is also taking shape rapidly. As well as lead essays by writers including film critic Margaret Pomeranz, who is guest curator of the film component of the project, there are wonderful texts on all the artists involved — I’ve read fiction writer Jennifer Mills on work by artist Jennifer Mills, ruminating on the 323 images of other Jennifers, all sourced from the internet; Diane Moon’s exquisite account of paintings by the late great Wakartu Cory Surprise, which eloquently evokes her country; and Maud Page’s terrific essay on Monika Tichacek’s new and surprising outsized watercolours, which throws new light on the artist’s work. It is very rewarding to be able to publish such thoughtful new writing and, of course, it’s a ‘must-read’!

DINING

Seared queen scallops and grilled black pudding, sautéed kipfler potatoes and caponata at the GOMA Restaurant
This Gallery favourite is made with fresh local scallops, black pudding, sautéed kipfler potatoes and a delicious caponata sauce. When the recipe was first devised, the dish was based on contradictory flavours and textures, however, the sweet flavour of the scallops and black pudding complements the sour flavour of the caponata sauce remarkably well. The secret to perfecting this recipe is using the best and freshest ingredients available.
