James Russell Architect

One of Queensland’s younger generation of architects, James Russell has been praised for his innovative and bold approach to residential architecture in subtropical urban and suburban environments. Like all the architects in the exhibition, Russell is highly skilled at adapting his design approach to suit different sites and their surrounds. However, in Russell’s projects the outcomes are often surprising, with the immediate impression being that they are somehow at odds with their context. Of his two exhibited projects, one is a modernist glass container appended to a nineteenth-century church, and the other is a large-scale civic building in the midst of conservative suburban homes.
