Social Networking

This exhibition shows how contemporary artists are exploring social contact with their subjects and audiences. Many are interested in historical events, but others look at the ways we perceive the world today and our place within it. Addressing themes including human rights, sustainability and cultural exchange, the works reflect on the ways that individuals shape, and are shaped by, their social networks. Read more

Lightness & Gravity: Contemporary Works from the Collection

'Lightness & Gravity' showcases the Gallery’s contemporary collection in a series of thematic constellations. The display features a truly international selection of artists and a number of recent major acquisitions. The title points to a longstanding philosophical discussion of the fundamental character of life (and by extension art making) as weighty, meaningful and constrained by history, or as playful and arbitrary — and thereby free. Carl and Phillip McConnell: Queensland Studio Potters

Carl McConnell (1926–2003) was the most important potter in the post-World War Two generation in Queensland, introducing stoneware and porcelain firing to the state. His superb craftsmanship has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, which established his nationwide profile. Phillip McConnell (b.1947), Carl’s eldest son, followed in his father’s footsteps and established a career of equal significance. Read more
