Acquisitions
To mark GOMA’s fifth anniversary, acquisitions of works by leading artists from the Gallery’s five contemporary collecting areas are on display.
Indigenous artist Vernon Ah Kee has risen quickly to the forefront of urban-based conceptual art and his three large, lush portraits — Annie Ah Kee, Annie Ah Sam (A) and Bella Ami, all 2008 — re-examine anthropological photographs of his own family, allowing them to be viewed through Aboriginal eyes.

A specially commissioned 22-metre-long Tongan ngatu ta¯’uli (black barkcloth) is a spectacular addition to the Pacific art collection. Black barkcloths are traditionally made for a chiefly purpose, and this extraordinary work can be viewed in the ‘Threads’ exhibition.

As a spectrum of vibrant colour, contemporary Australian artist Emily Floyd’s Steiner rainbow 2006 considers the rainbow’s symbolic associations with alternative political movements, signifying utopian ideals and a desire to do things differently.

A sculpture by Kohei Nawa, one of Japan’s most significant young artists, was enormously popular with visitors to ‘The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’. A major new work by the artist, PixCell-DoubleDeer#4 2010, now joins the Gallery’s contemporary Asian art collection.

Untitled 2007–08 is from Cindy Sherman’s celebrated ‘Balenciaga’ series. A work by one of the world’s most influential living photographers, this acquisition is an important addition to the Gallery’s holdings of contemporary international photography.

Premier of Queensland’s Sculpture Commission
The Premier of Queensland’s Sculpture Commission marks the fifth anniversary of the opening of the Gallery of Modern Art on 2nd December 2011 and 20 years of the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in 2012.
On 23 November, the Premier of Queensland’s Sculpture Commission selection committee met to review the submissions by the three shortlisted artists. At this meeting the committee, made up of representatives from the Queensland Art Gallery, Arts Queensland, the arts community, the Indigenous community, Events Queensland and Tourism Queensland, voted unanimously in favour of New Zealand artist Michael Parekowhai’s proposed sculpture The World Turns. A diverse exhibitions program marks the fifth anniversary and demonstrates the Gallery’s commitment to sharing, understanding and enjoying the visual arts.
Threads: Contemporary Textiles & the Social Fabric | 1 October 2011 – 5 February 2012 | GOMA
Bringing together a diverse range of contemporary textiles from the Gallery’s Australian, Asian and Pacific Collections, ‘Threads: Contemporary Textiles and the Social Fabric’ celebrates the ways in which contemporary artists explore and extend the textile medium. Many works draw on traditional textile practices while also engaging new technologies, materials and imagery to reflect and transform existing social, political and cultural conditions. Read more
Dinosaur Designs | 15 October 2011 – 25 March 2012 | Foyer Cabinet, GOMA
In recognition of the Gallery’s ongoing commitment to contemporary design, Australia’s Dinosaur Designs have been commissioned to produce a new body of work for GoMA’s fifth anniversary. It will be one of their largest and most dazzling projects to date, consisting of a number of large platters that will be displayed in the Foyer Cabinet, GoMA. Read more
Across country: Five Years of Indigenous Australian art from the Collection | 5 November 2011 - 21 October 2012 | GOMA
The past five years have been among the most exciting in the history of Indigenous Australian art. Indigenous artists from across the country have continued to find innovative ways to interpret their stories and experiences in an increasing range of mediums. ‘Across Country’ celebrates the Indigenous Australian art collection development since GoMA’s opening, by highlighting major acquisitions. Many of the acquisitions in this display have been made possible by the generous support of members of the public, donors and benefactors through the Queensland Art Gallery Foundation. Read more
Ten years of contemporary art: The James C Sourris AM Collection | 12 November 2011 – 19 February 2012 | GOMA
This exhibition celebrates James C Sourris’s involvement with the Gallery and highlights the vital role benefaction has played in the development of the Gallery’s contemporary art Collection. The exhibition will honour Mr Sourris’s sustained and generous support of the Gallery’s Collection. ‘The James C Sourris AM Collection’ comprises both Indigenous and non-Indigenous works, and a wide range of media including paintings, videos, installations and works on paper. Yayoi Kusama: Look Now, See Forever | 19 November 2011 – 11 March 2012 | GOMA
‘Look Now, See Forever’ transforms the dramatic spaces of the Gallery of Modern Art with a series of spectacular immersive rooms, featuring new sculptures and paintings as well as film projection and installation. Showcasing Kusama’s innovative work with colour, form, space and perception, this exhibition shows a senior artist at the peak of her powers. Read more
‘Yayoi Kusama: Look Now, See Forever’ is accompanied by an online catalogue, featuring expanded commentary on the works in the exhibition, newly commissioned scholarship on aspects of the artist’s practice, and an in-depth timeline of her life and work. Taking advantage of the dynamic character of online publishing, special features include updates throughout the course of the exhibition, and timelapse documentation tracking the evolution of The Obliteration Room.
Matisse: Drawing Life | 3 December 2011 – 4 March 2012 | GOMA
‘Matisse: Drawing Life’ is a major exhibition of works on paper by Henri Matisse and includes more than 300 drawings, prints and illustrated books. Presented in partnership with the Bibliothèque nationale de France, this will be the definitive exhibition of works on paper by one of the twentieth century’s greatest artists. Exploring the themes and subjects to which Matisse repeatedly returned throughout his long career, the exhibition will provide a unique insight into the artist’s daily practice of drawing. Read more

Drawing on children’s stories, creation myths, Buddhist cosmologies, video games and folktales, Pip & Pop create large-scale fantasy worlds coloured with a bright, often fluorescent palette, using cake-decorating tools, intricate layers of sugar, glitter, modelling clay and mirrors. Read more

Drawn To Screen: Graphic Novels, Comics & Serials | 6 January – 4 March 2012 | Australian Cinémathèque, GOMA
In 2012 the Gallery’s Australian Cinémathèque will present a broad international collection of over 40 films exploring the crossover between the drawn narrative and its adaptation to animation and live-action films. From classic comic serials to graphic novels, the program will chart how the sequential drawn narrative has transcended the printed page to film and television. The program will be divided into a number of thematic strands that focus on dominant genres and popular narratives as well as emphasising regional and historical trends. This is a ticketed film program with tickets going on sale in December 2011. Read more
